The British Art Show is the UK’s largest recurring contemporary art exhibition. Titled A Chorus of Strangers, it is curated by Ekow Eshun and explores how art can challenge fears of otherness and difference during periods of uncertainty and change. Moving beyond standard archetypes, it presents the Stranger as a Wanderer: a fluid presence moving between borders to offer new ways of seeing, connecting, and imagining otherwise.
The identity draws on Baroque old-style typefaces from the 18th century, which circulated between Oxford University and the Netherlands. Their movement tells a story of migration: the exchange of knowledge and the circulation of metal types. The logotype is set in Epicene by Klim Type, a contemporary redrawing based on the work of Dutch punchcutters Rosart and Fleischmann. The identity attempts to express multiple voices and coexisting beings through a simple and subtle typographic gesture: shifting vowels into italics. It creates an almost imperceptible vibration, lending the text a sense of oddness and ambiguity.
