Exhibited at the Hayward Gallery in London, Japanese artist Chiharu Shiota presents floor-to-ceiling woven installations that respond to the gallery’s iconic Brutalist architecture.

‘Combining immersive, web-like thread structures and everyday objects, her deeply atmospheric installations explore themes of absence, presence and the intricate matrix of connections that define our lives. As they envelop viewers in a tactile embrace, these poignant installations potently conjure a sense of recollection and loss, and challenge us to reflect on both our own personal narratives and the shared stories that shape our collective consciousness.’ Ralph Rugoff, Director of the Hayward Gallery

Reflecting her practice, her signature colour — red — runs throughout the publication, from the half cloth-bound cover to the text sections, creating a strong visual rhythm. The cloth is conceived as a dust jacket, traditionally a removable and disposable element, here reimagined as the book’s most precious feature, protecting it and enhanced with a special foil finish.
