“Colours communicate with each other using an undecipherable code that is impervious to even the most powerful algorithm. They are as slippery as an eel and as prickly as a pear. We will never discover a Rosetta Stone for colours.” (José Loureiro)
José Loureiro’s 2024 exhibition Croque Couleur at Frac Grand Large — Hauts-de-France brings together around one hundred and twenty works produced over a fifteen-year period. Loureiro explores the mechanics of gesture, questions of scale, the synthesis of movements and the autonomy of colour. Designed as a playful editorial object, The catalogue comprises three independent booklets. It offers multiple points of entry into the painter’s radical universe: texts and exhibition views, a catalogue of works, and a zoomed-in exploration of motifs and colours. Disrupting both linearity and chronology, this book proposes a playful reading experience and invites viewers to approach painting from every angle.
