Fieldnotes is an East London artist-run publishing project producing an annual print journal and public programme of workshops, mentoring, radio, screenings and readings. It promotes non-conforming creative practices that challenge arts inequalities, supporting new voices, interdisciplinary experimentation and the “third thing” between known forms — the spaces between translations and transitions.
We have art directed the journal since 2021 in collaboration with Bella Marrin and the editorial team. For the logotype and article titles, we collaborated with MAMA Type on a digital interpretation of Times Modern — the typeface designer Willy Fleckhaus used in the 1970s for Suhrkamp Verlag. Special care went into the ‘fi’ ligature within ‘fieldnotes’.

Publications form annual duos spanning two years, with colours responding to each other. Each journal’s margins shift from left to right, reflecting the malleability and materiality of language.
